Firewood Storage Trial

Investigating the drying rates of softwood firewood, outdoors under Irish climatic conditions.

The Forestry Research group at Waterford Institute of Technology established a firewood storage trial in June 2013 at the Carriganore West Campus of Waterford Institute of Technology. The main purpose of the firewood trial was to investigate the following:

Firewood Processing

25 tonnes of Sitka Spruce (Picea sitchensis) pulp wood was delivered to the study site. The firewood produced was 25cm and 45cm in length. In addition some of the firewood was split and some was left in the round.

In addition, some logs remained unprocessed. These logs were distributed between 30 storage pallets.

A proportion of each type of firewood was covered.
